7th Grade: Topic 8

How is Sal a "father figure" for Jennings?  Use specific details from the book.

27 comments:

  1. Sal is a father figure to Jennings because Sal is the man who was actually there for him when things went wrong and Jennings could tell him anything. Sal always listens to him and he most of the time takes Jennings family out. He calls Jenning's his son every time he talks to him. Jennings could always rely on him because he knew Sal loves him as much as he loves Sal. All in all Sal is more of a man (father) then the "old man" for all the ways he's helped Jennings family stay happy and for all the things the old man wouldn't and would never do.

  3. Sal was a big father figure to Jennings. He was there throughall the good and the bad, which is something a parent would be like. He knew everything about his life and had always been there for him through the hard times. Jennings tells him anything because of the integrity, affection and trustworthiness he should toward him. He cared alot for him and everytime he they talked Sal would call him "son". Sal loved him like if he was his real son and Jennings loved him like a father. Sal has been more of a father then his real father(a drunken). He helped reunite the family a little bit more and gave them something to smile about.

  5. Sal is a "father figure" to Jennings in many ways.Sal would call Jennings his son and would listen to Jennings if he had a problem.Sal would understand Jennings because both of them stayed at homes.Sal would treat Jennings as if he was his own son.An example of this is when Jennings told Sal he learned how to spell 3 new words Sal told everybody on the bus "my son learned 3 new words today" with pride everybody on the bus applauded.Jennings learned to rely on Sal and he always looked forward to seeing him every day to talk.Jennings knew he could talk to Sal about anything really.

  6. Sal is a ''Father Figure'' to young Jennings because he understands what he has been though,he also was in foster care. Sal would always listen to Jennings and made him feel better when he was down. For example, when midnight died he said that midnight knew he was his friend and it wasn't enough when he got him it was to late so then Jennings felt better when he left. Finally, Sal loves Jennings so much he calls him his son. For instance, when Jennings was being picked on his clothes that were the other kids he was so damaged that he was bleeding alot but Sal saw him and got him.He went with him to the hospital the whole time until he left with Mr. Frazier. In conclusion, Sal is a father figure for Jennings because he has no father at this point in his life.

  7. Sal is a "father figure" for Jennings because Jennings had no real father there for him when he grew up. Jennings only had his mom, until Sal came along. Sal literally calls Jennings his "son", though they had met a few weeks ago on A BUS. Even then, Sal treats Jennings as his son, such as when something is wrong, he notices, wonders how school went for him, and how his family is doing. This shows care a father would have, though Jennings has no real father. I also feel Sal emotionally changed Jennings, if not, why would when he ran away, he waited two days to see him? I see that Jennings, as he should, believes in Sal as a "fake/real father" in a way.

  8. Sal is a father figure for Jennings in the way that he takes care of him. Sal even calls Jennings his son. Sal brought food for Jennings and took the family on trips. Sal spent time with Jennings' mother as if a father would. Unlike Jennings' father, Sal is responsible, pays attencion to Jennings and he is not a drunk. Before Kennings met Sal, Jennings was despirate for affection and love. After time the only person that still loved and cared for jennings was sal. In my opinion Sal would have been a much greater influence to the Burch family whil the kids were still growing up.

  14. Sal is a father figure for Jennings because he actually loves Jennings and Jennings can always rely on him. Sal really cares about Jennings and the whole family actually loves him to, except George. Sal takes Jennings everywhere like road trips and other stuff. Jennings always get advice from Sal. I even think Sal is a better father than his real dad.

  15. Sal is a father figure to Jennings because he was like a father Jennings never had. He took care of Jennings and treated him like he was his son. Sal took the whole family(except George)on field trips and even took care of Jeremone. Sal cared for Jennings even when his mom was near death. Sal was a real father figure to Jennings, Jennings was sad when Sal had to go leave for 3 weeks at a time but when he came Jennings heart filled with joy.

  17. Well, Sal is kind of like a father figure to Jennings becuse of how acts around him and how he treats him.A detail would be that when jennings got a good grade on his vocab test Sal,the bus driver, acknowledge it and told(yelded) every passenger in the bus. That made jennings very happy.-Joi Tynes

  18. Sal plays an important part in Jennings's childhood and the book, They Cage The Animals At Night. Sal was a "Father Figure" to Jennings all over the book. It all started when Jennings hops on board on Sal's bus everyday after school(he was a bus driver). After they got to know each other (keep in mind that Sal had been to many homes himself), He called Jennings his "son." Many people had tried to be "parental figures" with Jennings (Martha, The Dailys and The Fraziers). Sal overall was more closer to him then anyone(except Jennings's Mother of course). Sal had the what I call "Father Instinct." He will sense any danger to his son or daughter (in our case it is Jennings). For example (from the book): Jennings got "new" sets of clothing from classmates. He wore them the next day and Sal thought his clothes were good looking on him. Once he entered the school, many schoolmates teased him and shouted to him that he wore his clothes. Soon people started poking, pushing, and punching Jennings. Luckily, Sal got Jennings in carried him to the hospital. As we fast forward through the book, Sal's bus is moved to the Bronx, and Jennings runs away to find Sal. He eventually finds Sal, but Sal took Jennings back home because on what he says later on in the book that running away will become a habit. Sal soon meets Jennings's mother and takes the family except George to trips together and sometimes with just Sal and Mom alone. After Sal gets a truck job, visits are less recurrent. As the result of injuries, Jennings's can't take care of the kids and Jennings was put in two more homes. In the end, Sal sees the lights of Jennings and hugged each other. At the Epilogue, Sal becomes a "sort of step-father" and takes cares of the kids and sees them grow. Overall, Sal was a good "father figure" to Jennings.

  20. Sal, as a kid, face similar trails like Jennings.
Being placed in many homes, they can't help not to have an invisible bond. I believe a Father Figure should be understanding and loving. Sal tries to be there for Jennings, althrough he sometime doesn't. I believe that Sal is the closest father will ever have

  21. Sal is a father figure to Jeannings because he is always there by his side and Sal has been through the same things as Jeannings, when he was young. He has been sent to foster homes before, just like Jeannings.Sal use to be a mean all the time when he was young, until a old man changed his life.Sal is father figure to Jeannings because when he got beaten up by the kids at his school,Sal was there by his side, and he got medical help right away for Jeannings.Sal did not care if all of Jeannings' blood was on his clothes, while he was carrying him, because that is how much of a father he is to Jeannings. Sal is person, that Jeannings could tell all his thoughts to him.{most of them} Later,in the book Sal also buys him food to eat, when Jeannings comes to see him in the Bronx. Jeannings only talks to Sal on the bus because he is the only that he knows the most about. If Jeannings had to choice who was a better friend,Mark or Sal,I think he would choice Sal,but that is my opinion.Back in Grady,I use to go on the bus,bus 5.I had a bus driver who was like a friend to me and I talked to him alot of times. One day he gave me some advice ,and he told me to stop hanging around with Tavon because he was a trouble maker at that time and I did not know about he was one.I decided to take his advice and he was right.Tavon started to get in alot of fights at that time. With out my bus driver I would not have been a good student, but now I am.Now,I start to hang out with Tavon because he is not that much of a big trouble maker anymore.{sometimes he is} My bus driver and Sal are a litte similar ,from each other. To conclude,Sal is a father figure to Jeannings in many ways.

  22. Sal is more a figure of a father to than his real because his real father adanded them. Another way sal is more of a figure of father to jenning is because sal went through some similar things just like Sal did. Their relationship started when Jennings had to go on Sals bus to go to school. As you can see Sal was a bus driver to take kids to school. Jennings scaped from the home and went to find Sal and he did. when he fund Sal, Sal gave him some food because Jennings was not eating well. When Sal brought Jennings to his mother and Jennings said if he could stay with Sal and Sal said that he was not ready.

  23. Sal is like a father figure toward Jennings. Sal would always give advice or solutions to Jennings' problems. He even took the whole family on a trip to the beach and to see Jerome. Also when Jennings had fallen and cut his wrist Sal was the one that rushed him to the hospital. Sal is someone that Jennings can trust or rely on. Jennings maybe feels like that Sal is not going to go away, hes going to stay with him and not leave like others have.

  24. Sal is like a father to Jennings because his father is a drunk and is no longer around and George is not the best person to look up to.But when Sal comes around he treats Jennings like a real son. Sal takes Jennings and his brothers and his mother out for pinics, rides in the country and out to dinner. Now that Sal is visting the family more George is not happy because he thinks that Sal is taking his role of being the father figure in the house. Now that Sal is around Jennings feels like he has someone to look up to and someone to give him good advice.
