  26. Due to Maya Angelou's prestigious standing in American literature, it would be difficult to guess how troubled her childhood truly was. Angelou, who grew up as Marguerite Johnson, was raised in an era defined by hardship. For example, she was brought up in the Great Depression and had to endure the trying years of World War II. Also, as an African American, Johnson struggled with all of the various prejudices and discrimination that came about as a result of her skin color. As if life was not difficult enough, Marguerite was raised in a broken household. Her parents often fought and eventually divorced. To make matters worse, she was even abused. Clearly, Johnson's childhood, although tough, profoundly influenced her later works.
