Assignment # 15: Independent Reading

This assignment is for both my English 7 students and that motley crew of 8th graders I teach 7th period.  As I reminded you in class, your Independent Reading is due April 5th.  Please indicate your current status by answering a few questions.  By doing this honestly, you will at least receive 5 pts towards your homework grade.

In a brief paragraph, please answer the following questions using complete sentences:
  1. What are the names of the books you are reading and who are the authors?
  2. What is the name of the protagonist in your book(s)?  Describle him/her.
  3. What is the greatest conflict your protagonist faces in the story?
  4. Are you similar to either one of the protagonists?  If so, how?  If not...how are you different?
If you do not complete this assignment, I will assume you have not started your Independent Reading.  I suggest you find one book to read and write about before the end of the quarter...half credit is much better than no credit at all.

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE MONDAY, MARCH 28TH AT 7:30 AM.

  4. instead of two books i decided to read a 420 paged book called everwild the sequel to everlost by Neal shusterman. In this book the author gives us several protagonist in the book as well as antagonists. the protagonist i would say are Nick a.k.a "the chocolate ogre" and ally a.k.a "lone wanderer". It switches back and forth between the two in the everwild. strangely enough they are both trying to defeat "the evil sky witch" or "the angel" in nick and allies perspective she is a sky witch trapping children from seeing the light but to the children shes an angel protecting them from the chocolate ogre. the weird thing is.. Mary (the sky witch) and nick (the chocolate ogre) are in love but believe in different things. while ally goes against everything Mary is for. there is also Mikey McGill but i cant give all the details out now. I believe i am similar to nick because if he has a problem with something, he shoves it away. when nick fist entered everlost, he only had a smudge of chocolate on his face. as he continued to ignore it, the chocolate spread...and spread...and spread till it covers almost his entire body and everything he touches becomes chocolate. while i try and run away from my problems as well. nor Mary or nick want to be wrong but they can combine their statements or beliefs so they cant have a disagreement. they try to forget the fact they love each other but they forgot that the more you try to forget something, the more you end up remembering it...

  5. The books I’m reading for my Independent reading are called The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. The protagonist in both books is Katniss Everdeen. Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12 of Panem. She's tough and brave, she's a little hardened, and she kills rabbits by shooting them clean through the eye for her survival. Katniss is a clever, tough girl in a game that is always intended for someone to be paranoid about who is going to kill you first. In The Hunger Games, book 1, the game is based on the survival of the last one or two contestants from the same district to receive goods and useful things for their community. The district that Katniss lives at is very poor. The Capitol demands each District to send one boy and one girl to a competition where they will fight till death in a nationally televised event. When Katniss's sister is chosen to be the one to go, Katniss steps up to take her place. The Hunger Games focuses on what Katniss goes through in the battle to death. It describes her puppy love with District 12 male participant, Peeta and describes her ability to survive what she goes through. In Catching Fire, book 2, Katniss and Peeta return home after managing to be both allowed to live at the end of the games. The sequel focuses more on their lives after the games including a Victory Tour, preparing for the next games, and Katniss's struggle between two young loves, Peeta and Gale. Katniss shows her ability to survive when facing confronts poisonous mists, deranged monkeys, and candy pink birds trying to skewer human necks. The greatest conflict in book 1 was Katniss trying to stay alive. She was face to face to the one person she pretended to hate and had a hard time to admit she cared for him. Instead of killing each other they helped each other out. He betrayed her by joining with another team although soon that team would have to kill each other. Katniss joined with a little girl in the games. Peeta was attacked by his own group but survived, and Katniss’s friend was killed. They both found each other and made their own group. The conflict in book 2 was Katniss having to choose the boy she loved the most, the one that was with her through survival or the one that taught her how to survive in hard times. I am different than the protagonist because she’s tough, and brave. I’m more shy and afraid. Katniss seems like the type of person who could confront anything; in contrast I’m afraid to what comes ahead of me. I don’t do change, but Katniss lives with it. She is faced with challenges through all her life, and she usually finds a way through them.

  9. The 400 page book I am reading is called The Seventh Tower, by Garth Nix. The protagonist of this story is Tal Graile-Rerem, ( His full name) Though the author usually calls him Tal. His greatest conflict is to find a primary sunstone, one bright and big enough to get him and his family into the inner castle. I am dislike tal in many ways. He is more cowardly, yet probably smarter. And of course, his life is based on a ROY G. 12. The title of the first book read was Frindle by Andrew Clements and the protagonist is Nick Allen who is in elementary school. He has lots of ideas flowing in his head. Some say he is a wise guy and always tries to divert the teachers attention away from school work during the day. The greatest conflict in Frindle is when Nick makes up a new name for a pen and all the kids in school start using it causing confusion, ruckus and teachers think he is being disobedient. I am not like Nick Allen because I do not like change and making things up out of the blue, that does not come easy. The other book read was Not for a Billion Gazillion Dollars by Paula Danziger. The protagonist in this story is Matthew Martin he is a sixth grader and is full of money making ideas hopefully his parents will see he is getting older and can handle things in life. The greatest conflict Matthew faces is he wants a computer program which his parents will not buy for him. So he struggles to find ways to make money to buy it. Yes I am a little like the protagonist because I would like games and have to work for the money in order to have stuff it is not given to me.

Larten couldn't handle himself because he was his closest friend and he was the only one he could talk too. Larten took a sharp object in stabed him in the throt. He ran into a grave and found a vampire know he has to choice beteewn being a normal human and keep runing from the angry people or become a vampire. 14. The names of my books are The Sea of Monsters and The Titan's Curse both by Rick Riordan. The name of the protagonist is Percy Jackson. He is the son of Poseidon and is dyslexic. He's been given many quests and he succeeded in all of them. He's very good friends with daughter of Athena, Annabeth, and Grover, a satyr. One of the craziest quests he has gone on was going to an island to find a golden fleece that could heal anything. As well as this, his old friend Luke turns against him to help one of the Titan's, Kronos. Based on everything Percy has gone through, I would say I am nothing like him. First of all, he is really brave and would never let anything touch him or get in his way. I would have no idea what to do if I were in situations like Percy has been through. Percy has so many things yet to come. There is always a way for him to get out of trouble. All in all, he has faced many challenges that I could never imagine living with.

  17. The first book I'm reading is called "The Misfits", by James Howe. Then the second book I'm reading is called "Runaway", by Wendelin Van Draanen. In my first book the protagonist name is Bobby and he is an overweight kid in middle school, with his friends that also are underdogs of the seventh grade. His mother had died of cancer and him and his dad live in a trailer. In the second book I'm reading the protagonist is a girl named Holly that ran away from her foster parents because they were abusive. Her mom was a drug addict and she had died when Holly was only 7 or 8 years old and she would have to take care both herself and her mother when she was alive. She has runaway and now is figuring how to survive on her own in the real world. The protagonist in my first book greatest conflict was figuring out a way to conquer his fears and run for student government president and make a change in his school and in his friends lives. In my second book Holly had to face the real world and always struggle on how to survive and provide for herself. Both protagonists are alike because both are struggling to find out who they are and how to overcome the fear inside of them. Bobby is confused about himself and doesn't know what to do and also thinks no one can understand him. Though his friends symbolize motivation for him to just get through another day of humiliation. When for Holly her journal symbolizes motivation as well because she doesn't have anyone to vent to since she's by herself.

  19. My third quarter independent reading novel was Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs. Dr. Temperance Brennan is a brilliant forensic anthropologist. It is her job to identify bodies where the flesh has been too degraded for a regular coroner to obtain evidence from. Brennan is a passionate woman with a fiery temper. She cares deeply for the dead and fights fiercely to find their murderer. Brennan believes the multiple bodies are victims of a serial killer. Determined, she must convince head of the investigation, Detective Claudel, of this. As much as I admire and idolize Dr. Brennan, I would have to say her and I do not share many qualities. Dr. Brennan is strictly rational, follows protocol and lives by scientific laws. She believes in no higher power and that the heart is merely a muscle.

  20. The 498 paged book I chose and read for Independent Reading for the 3rd Quarter is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The protagonists of the novel is Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen. Isabella (Bella) is a 17 year old girl that just moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with his dad (Charlie). Edward is a immortal 17 year old vampire that lives with his family and moved from Alaska to Forks. Bella and Edward end up having a complicated relationship despite (and because of) the risks that a human (Bella) is in love with a vampire (Edward). The fact that Edward is a vampire produces risks for Bella's life. Despite Edward defending Bella, She is still at risk because of the fact that Edward is a vampire himself and Bella could get hurt. This leads to the greatest conflict of the book. it all started when Edward invites Bella to watch Edward and his family play baseball. The sounds of them playing gets three vampires' attention. Their names are Victoria, James and Laurent. The game ends and the hunt begins as the Cullens do their best to protect Bella from the potential lethality of these vampires. Alice Cullen and Jasper Cullen take Bella back to Phoenix to get away from these vampires while Edward and the others go to Vancouver to distract James from going to the right direction. James eventually finds the trail and ends up at Bella's mother's house where he calls Bella in a scary form and told her to come to him or her mom will get killed. She ditches Alice and Jasper and meets James at a ballet studio where she turns into a bag of blood and bones. Edward saves her in the end and winds up at the hospital where she recovers. I am totally not like Bella almost at all. But like Bella, I can sometimes be very shy with new people. Well in the end, I relate with these people well. I am "some what" like Edward because I (used to) like classical music, but I am also not a vampire or immortal.

Junior is part of an native american or as he calls himself Indian. He was born with a head full of water which caused brain damage, then it caused him to have big feet and hands as well as having a really skinny body, he describes himself to look like a capital L. The conflict so far is surviving in a high school for his freshmen year in a district he has never been in. He is constantly suffering , but he wanted to transfer there because he knew it would help him in the future. I am not similar to the protagonist at all. The thing that Edward and Bella face together in Eclipse is that Edward has to save Bella from being eaten from the vampires that are vallen victorian. Before he turned into a vampire he tried to loss weight but it was to late. He is also a geek in comic books and doesn't have much friends. One major conflict in the story that Doug faces is that since he is a vampire he doesn't get to eat his regular chicken fingers with fries, but just blood and only blood. Because he now lives in San Francisco, California there aren't farm for Doug to go around sucking on cow blood. His friend Jay, also a vampire, has to go through this too, but both desperately craving blood and at the same time has to do it asa normal as possible. I can compare myself to Doug by how fat we are. I am pretty fat myself, but I don't know how Doug would be in reality. Doug and I are very much different because of our hobbies. 30. The name of the book I read Is the lightning thief by Rick Riordan. It is about a 12 year old kid named Percy Jackson, who has been kicked out of 6 schools in 6 years and has dyslexia and H.D.H.D( he is a New Yorker:). I may have forgotten to say this but he is son of the Greek god Poseidon god of all water in the planet no big deal. As he goes to Half camp blood after being attacked by a minotaur he is sent on a quest because he needs to find Zeus Master Bult( this is in capital letters because it could end the world as we know it or fry us until we all die) if he does not it would cause a civil war between the gods( that would not be pretty.
This kid is very similar to me because like me I have H.D.H.D which means that I fidget around with things, aggressive, competitive, it is hard to keep track of time, and very hard for me not to move. I also have green eyes and hate to write. We both like Greek myths and both have awesome english teachers ( Mr. Charon may be a centaur but does know his stuff). We are also very different , for starters I can not make toilets explode. I also do not have a smelly step dad named Gabe that only plays poker with friends wile smoking and drinking( Did i mention he is fatter than a hippo). I also am not 12 anymore and do not have a pen that can be turned in to a sword named Anaklusmos which is Greek for rip tide.

  31. My first book is The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkein. The protagonist in my book is Bilbo Baggins. He is lazy and unmotivated. While his friends love to adventure about, Bilbo only wants to stay home and eat. The main obstacle he faces is simply that his friends' lives are "too exciting" for him! Bilbo doesn't like to be dragged along on these adventures. Dangerous, or boring. He does not like to get out of the house much. He enjoys eating, though! I, on the other hand, am not like Bilbo. I would much rather be out and about than stay in my stuffy house all day. His life style is suit for more of a laid back and... somewhat boring life. I like getting out and involved, doing things where I can achieve something. Sometimes it's nice to be at home sometimes, though. I can get sick of being out for too long. Regarding my second book, I have not yet to find a book that is 100 pages worth to read. I might be reading a collection of short stories from John W. Campbell.

  32. The book I’m reading is The Phantom Tollbooth. The main character is not an ordinary boy name Milo. He has everything a boy could want, such as, toys and entertainment. However, he still finds everything not interesting. Milo doesn’t have any friends and he is usually quiet. Additionally, he doesn’t like school, so he believes what he is being taught in school is not useful.

Unfortunately, Milo’s greatest conflict is he has no sense of humor and doesn’t find anything in life fascinating. He needs to learn how to make friends and have a better imagination. Moreover, I am different than Milo in many ways. I find life to be extremely challenging, however, Milo, finds life to be a waste of time. In life, you have to apply yourself in order to be successful. Also, I am the type of person that likes to have fun. Furthermore, I like being around people who enjoy themselves. I am active; I play sports and socialize with my friends instead of feeling trapped like Milo. Generally, when I am bored I do things I enjoy, such as reading.

The other book I am reading is Jurassic Park. The main character in the book is Dr. Alan Grant. He is a paleontologist who is famous for studying fossilized dinosaur nests in Montana. Dr. Grant takes pride in discovering fossilized dinosaur nest, instead of being a stuffy professor like many of his colleagues. In the face of the crisis that occurs at the park, Dr. Grant is the perfect levelheaded, unbiased protagonist. His biggest conflict in is having trouble finding the Raptor nest. Other dinosaurs such as the T Rex are stopping him from reaching his goal. I am different from Dr. Grant because I am not a paleontologist who studies fossilized dinosaur nests. However, I am similar to him because I also find dinosaurs fascinating.

  34. The name of the book Im reading is Secrets in the Shadows by Anne Schraff. The protagonist of the book is Roylin Bailey and he is a sophmore and his is tall and skinny . He is also dark-skinned. The biggest conflict of the story is when Roylin steals money from one of his old friends Mr.Miller to buy a gift that a girl ( Korie) really wants. I am not similar to Roylin because I wouldnt of stolen money from an old frien because I would've felt very guilty. I am similar because in the story he actually worriedfor his old friend who had died according to Roylin because Tuttle ( apartment owner) lies to Roylin that Mr.Miller died but he was actually at a nursery home.

ps. i finished my first now i just need my second.

  36. The book I finished reading, and will probably be my only one due to time, was Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code by Eoin Colfer. The protagonist is Artemis Fowl, a 13 year old Irish genius who has a love for money. He has relations with the People, who are fairies that live under us, using Stonehenge as a satellite. The major conflict in the story is how Fowl is tricked out of a business deal by Arnold Spiro, therefore giving Spiro the C Cube, a piece of fairy technology way ahead of its time. Spiro plans on using it, and by doing so he will find out about the People, putting them at risk. Fowl then creates a massive plan which involves stealing the cube, arresting Spiro, and forgetting about the People forever. The similarities between me and Fowl? He's Irish, I'm Italian. I have short hair, He has long hair. Everything else is parallel. Genius, love for money, 13 years old.

  40. The names of the two books im reading is "Diary of a Wimpy Kid": The Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney and "Cirque du Freak": A Living Nightmare by Darren Shan. The protagonist for the Diary of a Winpy Kid is named Greg. He has an older bother named Rodrick and a younger one is named Manny. Its mostly about his life. The main conflict of the book was that he was bored while everyone was having a great time that year. He also wanted a new best friend. Im not like Greg he only has 1 friend. Cirque Du Freak is about a kid named Darren Shan. He and his friend Steve go to a show named Cirque Du Freak. When they went Steve wanted to talk to Mr. Crepsley who was a vampire. Steve wants to turn into a vampire but he has blood is evil. While Darren was in the circus he wanted to take the spider that Mr. Crepsley had. The coflict was when the spider bit Steve later because the spider was posinous. I'm not like this character because fantasy isnt real and never will be.

  41. The names of the two books i am reading is Brian's winter the author of the book is Gary Paulsen and the other one is runaway the author is Wendelin Van Draanen. Brian is smart, inpendent and he is brave. Brian can't find food to eat but he kills animals sooo he kills one rabbit and he ate the rabbit. And the other conflict is that his rifle broke and he had to make some bowing arrows and pointy arrows. I am similar to Brian like he is brave and i am too. Brian is brave prabably becuase he left his mom far away and still misses his mom. I left my dad in peru and i was a little brave becuase my mom promise me that she is going to be next to me. The other book is that she runaway from the orphan and the police is finding her. She is dangerous, armed, and into drugs. she has a journal and writes everything that happens to her like she writes about her mother. Well i write in my journal like my dad saying that i want to see him and hug him saying " i love u dad".
