Assignment # 16

This is for both 7th & 8th grade.  We have our quarterly vocabulary test next week (April 5th)...and it will be much more challenging than the previous two tests.  Please complete the following assignment to help you practice:

Assignment: Please choose ANY 5 words from Units 11-15 and write a compound sentence for each word.

Example:  Some people are under the illusion that they do not have to work hard to be successful in life; they are in for a rude awakening one day.

This assignment is due: Wednesday March 30th @ 7:30 AM.

Assignment # 15: Independent Reading

This assignment is for both my English 7 students and that motley crew of 8th graders I teach 7th period.  As I reminded you in class, your Independent Reading is due April 5th.  Please indicate your current status by answering a few questions.  By doing this honestly, you will at least receive 5 pts towards your homework grade.

In a brief paragraph, please answer the following questions using complete sentences:

1. What are the names of the books you are reading and who are the authors?
2. What is the name of the protagonist in your book(s)?  Describle him/her.
3. What is the greatest conflict your protagonist faces in the story?
4. Are you similar to either one of the protagonists?  If so, how?  If not...how are you different?

If you do not complete this assignment, I will assume you have not started your Independent Reading.  I suggest you find one book to read and write about before the end of the quarter...half credit is much better than no credit at all.

English 8: Assignment # 14

Assignment: Please answer the following questions from The House on Mango Street: 

1. In the vignette, "Family of Little Feet" - what is Cisneros warning the reader about?  What are some examples of foreshadowing used by her? 

2.  Keeping with the the theme from the aforementioned vignette, please give an example of something in your life with a similar theme.  Please be as descriptive as possible.  Did you feel similar to how the girls felt at the end of their day?

3. In the vignette, "Rice Sandwich" - what lesson did Esperanza learn?  Be specific and use details from the story.

4. Once again, please share an example a similar theme from your own life.  Why do you think you were disappointed?

Assignment: Write a brief summary (5-6 sentences) about what you learned today about Jonas' community in Chapter 6 of The Giver.

Assignment: Write a brief paragraph (5-6 sentences) discussing some of the ideas and concepts you saw in class Thursday when you read your classmates writing.  Be specific, but not include anyone's name.

English 7: Assignment # 12

Assignment:  Write a brief paragraph (5-7 sentences) comparing Jonas's family unit with your own family.  Some questions to ponder:  Do you have family rituals?  Do you eat dinner together every night?  Do you share your inner thoughts, feelings, and fears? Do you have respect for each other? Think about this for a few minutes first...BEFORE writing anything.  Some parents have commented that some of our grammar on the blog is TERRIBLE...and I would like to change that opinion.  SO, PLEASE PROOFREAD OR HAVE SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY PROOFREAD WITH YOU.

English 8: Assignment # 12

Assignment: Write a brief paragraph (6-8 sentences) about the similarities and differences between the following women: Marin, Alicia, and Rosa Vargas.  Remember to be specific and stick to our rules for solid grammar and proper writing.

Assignment: Choose 5 words from Unit 14 and write a compound* sentence for each word.

* A compound sentence combines two simple sentences using either a semi-colon or a coordinating conjunction.

Example: Edward exaggerated his point because he felt like Scott should be included in the jubilee.

English 7: Assignment # 11

Assignment: Please choose 3 of the following words and use them in their own compound sentence*:

application - complex - texture - reveal - dismantle - illusion - frugal - manufacture -oration - accompaniment

* Reminder: A compound sentence uses two simple sentences combined using either a semicolon or a coordinating conjunction.

Example:  1. Mr. Baiocco's oration to the audience was well received; he inspired both students and parents.
                  2. I like the feel of the couch's texture; it is soft and comfortable.

There are many themes that we have read about in Sandra Cisnero's The House on Mango Street: family, poverty, friendship, family, independence, etc. 

Assignment: Choose one of these themes and write a brief 6-8 sentence paragraph analyzing it.  Lets try NOT to all pick the same theme.  Remember to check back to the blog and read everyone's paragraph before class on Monday. (Hint, Hint)

Assignment: Please research  Roberto Clemente and post two interesting facts/details about him.  Just like last time you must use two different sources and include your source in parenthesis.  You you are not permitted to use "Wikipedia" or any on it's off-shoots.  Again, remember to  read your classmates comments before posting, we do not want any repeats...and don't forget to go back and read the comments that came after you.  Good luck!!
