Assignment # 7 (ALL STUDENTS)

Well boys and girls, this could be an interesting weekend...with Hurricane Irene creeping up the coast (personification - lol). This assignment will therefore be a topical one...not not tropical. Topical infers something that is current with what is happening right now....

THE TASK: Write a brief paragraph (8-10) sentences detailing some of the things you and your family are doing to prepare for the storm. If you're going to be contrary and say that you're not doing "anything" for the hurricane then write a longer paragraph (15-20) sentences about the economic status of our country right now in 2012. Please list at least 3 causes for our recession and 3 ways our current administration can help us get out of it.*

Good luck...

  3. The hurricane already past so I am writing a little late but I will tell you what we did. Me and my mom went to Sam's club were it was crowded. We bought water and all sorts of things in case of a blackout. There was a blackout so we had no electricity for like 4 days. We basically had nothing to do so we went over to my grandmas house were there was electricity or i went over to my friends house. After the blackout was over it took a day or two to get back to normal.

  4. Last week when we first heard about the storm(Thursday), we went shopping, and there was no water by the gallon at all, so we had to settle for bottled. we cleared the entire patio, and got a can opener on Saturday that didn't even work. I was nervous to go to sleep because I heard there were tornadoes in some areas. The wind did get scary at points. But guess what? Absolutely NOTHING happened on my street, despite all of our preparations. I did feel bad for some of my friends, who lived on the south side of Elmsford(near Payne street), where some people were evacuated due to the flooding. It did get really cold on Sunday night, and I was really depressed because that was what it felt like in October. I felt bad for people in the southern states because of another hurricane, that wasn't as powerful as Irene.

  5. Last week, to prepare to for the storm my family and I bought some food. Afterwards, we brought everything upstairs so that hey wouldn't get ruined in the flood. We slept normally until the water started entering our house. We then went next door until the water went into that house! I stayed at Sebastian H's for a few days until the flooding went down. When I finally got home, all of the plants and furniture were destroyed. Now, I'm helping clean up the house. Seems like our preparations weren't enough.

  6. My experience with Hurricane Irene was quite unconventional and ironically fun. Although my family did prepare for it by stocking up on food and taking out candles and flashlights, we also decided on partying away our worries. Since some extended family we visiting from Canada and Guyana, we thought this would be a great idea. So the night before Irene was supposed to strike, we danced, laughed, and partied the night away. In the morning, it was quite grey and my Canadian family fled home before the hurricane could hit. Meanwhile, my Guyanese family were sitting tight and going through this storm right there with us. All flights were canceled, of course. So we waited but it seemed as though this hurricane was just not coming. And then, it started around 12AM. When family is around, my cousins and us stay up till the wee hours of the morning so this night was no different. Around, 4AM our power went out and this just thrilled us. MY cousins, sister, and I literally watched this hurricane for I don't know how long. It was quite an experience to watch something like this. The next morning, we were still out of power and when it got dark that night my cousins all decided what a great idea it would be to watch Insidious. Conveniently, we downloaded the movie at a time when there was power. After watching that movie in pitch black it kinda gets to you. Overall, my experience with Hurricane Irene was memorable and I enjoyed the time I got to spend with family.

  8. Before the storm even started, I recently came back from Peru. As I came back I never even knew there was going to be a hurricane, and my mother and other brothers weren't back from Peru yet. I was worried wether my mom's flight was going to be canceled due to the storm and if the storm was going to effect my house or family in anyway. Two days before the hurricane hit Elmsford we bought food and extra water. The next day my mom and brothers came home safely. The day the hurricane was suppose to come, nothing happened, but the cable, telephone, and internet was out for 3 days. All worried for nothing. Then the next day I wake up with the sun all over my face.

  9. When I was first being notified about Hurricane Irene I was actually on vacation in Virginia. It was a crazy and mixed up trip for sure and I certainly will never forget it(along with the earthquake.) It didn't change our plans much except for the fact that we had to leave a day early to get back home before it hit, and coming back wasn't exactly great either due to everyone trying to evacuate. When we finally returned home we didn't make any preparations at all to brace for Irene. While Irene was in action I realized a couple of trees fell in my backyard and the power was out for a minute or so but that was about it. Overall, it was a really devastating storm in certain areas all across the east coast, including Elmsford. I cant even come to imagine what things would have been like if Irene was a category 2 or 3...

  10. While I was here I noticed the hurricane on the news when it interrupted my television. At first my family did not really care since we thought it was not near hear. Then we realized there were so many storms and a lot of black out. So what we did to prepare is to first take everything we had outside like plants inside our house, we charged every thing like phone just in case and put a drape over our house to protect from storm.

  11. The hurricane experience was pretty nice. First my parents went to to buy some food at the supermarket and we were lucky there was enough food to buy. Then we we got home my mom went to get water at cvs. The day I woke up we realized we did not have a black out so that was a releif but, we soon found out that my aunt had one so they came over to my house. My aunt, uncle and cousins stayed at my house. My relatives left two days later and the hurricane experience was actully really fun.

  12. My experience with Hurricane Irene was not bad at all. I was not scared but that still did not stop me from preparing for the hurricane. My dad went early in the morning to get food and the store was packed. However, we still managed to get some food and water. We went through many stores to find one flashlight, but all of them were sold out. We still had candles and matches, if the electricity went. Thank God the electricity went out in the middle of the night for us, because we were sleeping. However, the hurricane still caused damage. Even though, the hurricane did not cause damage to my home or street it still caused damage to the street down my house, Babbitt Court. I saw people coming out of their houses, through boats, but it was cool to see the flood, up close in person.

  13. The experience with Hurricane Irene was like a normal day. I was looking forward to it because most of my summer was boring. The day to prepare for the hurricane was pretty nice looking at how many people react to it seriously. My mom was herself, going crazy, and she has gotten gallons of water to drink. She also bought a bunch of batteries for flashlights. Even though, my day was fine some of my friends's electricity went out. One got flooded and he, Sebastian Bedoya, came over and so did others next day because they had some problems involving the electricity.

  14. What my family and I did to prepare for Hurricane Irene in the beginning was nothing at all. We had thought that nothing usually happens here so there is no point of doing anything. Though we were watching the news closely for any updates on the storm. The night the storm had hit it wasn't very bad for us. It was as if it was any ordinary storm. Next day when I had woke up we still had power, though the plants in our front lawn was broken. So that day my dad had went to clean outside and my brothers and I were helping him, but at the same time there was strong wind that was just making things difficult to do. Also that day my mom had told my brothers and me to charge all our phones and then to bring all the plants in the pots inside. Then I saw my mom getting all the candles and flashlights out and that's when I knew it was a big deal. Throughout that whole day I was receiving text messages from my friends telling me if they have power or not. Next day we finally had no power and I was actually glad that the power went out because I enjoy power outs. So that day my family lost power and I called Vishnu and his brother on my cell phone to come over to my house. When they arrived my brother and I suggested to play taboo. So we just started to play games and enjoying each others company. Then that day when my dad had came back from work he was happy that the power came back. Then we just looked up and realized the power had came back! We were so into the game we didn't realize that the power came back. After that Vishnu and his brother had went home and we had turned on the television to watch the news. When I watched the the results of the storm I was shocked and surprised that a storm could do so much damage. At that moment I felt sympathetic for everyone that was affected by this horrendous storm. What I saw and heard on the news is something I can never forget.
